Those questions matter, but they miss the one that actually determines whether the purchase was worth it. When a surveyor, an internal auditor, or a risk management team asks how containment and air control were handled on a specific job, months after the fact, does the equipment and the process around it produce a clear, consistent answer? Or does the answer depend on who happens to remember that job and how well?
That second question is the real evaluation criteria for infection control equipment in healthcare environments. Equipment that looks capable in a demo can still fail the only test that matters if it doesn't hold up the same way on job forty as it did on job one, across different crews, different sites, and different levels of attention.

Why "It Works" Isn't the Right Bar
Every piece of infection control equipment on the market works, in the sense that it can create containment or move air when it's set up correctly by someone who knows what they're doing. That's a low bar, and it's not the one that matters to an infection preventionist or a facilities director standing in front of a survey team.
The real bar is whether the equipment performs the same way regardless of who is running the job. A system that requires a skilled technician to configure it correctly is a system that will eventually be configured incorrectly, on the day that technician is out sick or a new contractor is on-site for the first time. Repeatability of setup. Can two different crews, with two different skill levels, produce the same containment result without a supervisor standing over them? If the correct outcome depends on training that isn't consistently reinforced, the equipment is only as reliable as your weakest crew on any given day.
Verifiable performance in use. Look for equipment that lets a team confirm pressure differentials, airflow direction, or filtration status in real time rather than trusting that a checklist got completed correctly. A negative air machine with a visible, verifiable pressure reading is a different proposition than one that just needs to be plugged in and assumed to be working.
Documented filtration performance. HEPA filtration should mean 99.97%+ efficiency at 0.3 microns, not an approximate or marketing-adjusted version of that standard. Ask for the actual filter specification and testing documentation, not just the acronym on the unit.
Durability across repeated deployments. Equipment that degrades, loses seal integrity, or requires frequent repair after a handful of uses introduces a new variable every time it's redeployed. A unit rated for daily use across dozens of projects behaves differently than one built for occasional use.
Fit with existing containment strategy. A cart, barrier, or air scrubber that doesn't integrate cleanly with your current containment configuration, whether that's an ante room setup or a standard barrier system, creates friction that eventually gets solved by skipping a step.
Where Equipment Categories Actually Differ
Not every piece of infection control equipment is solving the same problem, and buyers often compare across categories that aren't actually interchangeable. Understanding what each one is built to do, and where audit risk tends to concentrate when the wrong category gets substituted for the job, matters more than comparing specs within a single category.
Mobile containment carts are built for sealed, movable work zones on short-duration or spot repairs. Audit risk shows up when they get pushed into larger jobs they weren't designed for, at which point seal integrity is the first thing to suffer. Treating them as disposable defeats the entire reason to use a repeatable system in the first place.
None of this is about ranking the categories against each other. It's that the wrong category, applied to the wrong job, is a more common source of audit exposure than any single product being low quality.
What Actually Fails Under Scrutiny
A few patterns show up repeatedly when infection control equipment doesn't hold up to a closer look, and none of them are about the equipment being defective.
The first is equipment that was purchased for one type of job and gets stretched to cover jobs it wasn't built for. A cart-based containment solution designed for spot repairs, deployed on a full unit renovation, is a mismatch that no amount of careful setup fully resolves.

What does the filtration documentation actually say? Request the specific test data behind any HEPA claim rather than accepting the label at face value.
How does this fit with what we already have deployed? Equipment that requires a completely separate setup process from your existing containment strategy adds a new variable your team has to manage, which is its own form of risk.
What happens operationally when this piece of equipment isn't available? If a single point of failure in your equipment inventory can stall a project or force a workaround, that's worth pricing into the decision alongside the sticker cost.
Matching Equipment to the Environment
An ambulatory surgery center running frequent, short-turnaround repairs has a different equipment profile than a health system managing a multi-year renovation across several buildings.
